Climate change poses a growing threat to business through physical risks, regulatory pressures, and shifting investor and customer expectations. As jurisdictions introduce carbon pricing and disclosure mandates, companies and financial institutions must act decisively to understand and reduce their emissions. Traditional carbon accounting methods are no longer sufficient- robust, auditable data is essential not only for compliance, but for risk management, investment planning, and long-term resilience.

This two-day course equips corporates and banks with the tools to respond to this challenge. Day 1 focuses on next-generation carbon accounting - why it’s urgently needed, how to implement it effectively, and how to produce accurate decision-grade information.

Day 2 turns to decarbonisation strategies, including credible transition plans, technology and policy levers, investment opportunities, and voluntary carbon markets. Together, these sessions offer a comprehensive, practical framework for turning climate risk into strategic advantage.

Though much of his earlier research has focused on grand strategy making in the Second World War, he has become increasingly interested in how these processes work for 21st century war. Within that, Professor O’Brien also has an interdisciplinary interest in how Strategic Studies and Management Studies discuss strategy, and what the disciplines can learn from each other.
Dr James Rae
Earth Scientist

James is an Earth Scientist, motivated by the major goal of advancing our understanding of the carbon cycle and climate. Much of his work investigates Earth's past climate history using geochemical measurements on archives including sediments, fossils, and ice cores.
